Derwent St

NAME:

Derwent St was known as Waverley St until 1937. It was renamed the year before the major renaming exercise in Mt Albert.

Waverley Street was formed around 1927 (Auckland Libraries, n.d.). Waverley is a placename from England. It might have been named after the very popular Waverley novels by Sir Walter Scott.

Derwent St is probably named after Derwent Water (Davenport, 1990, p.63), a lake in England’s Lake District, due to its proximity to Western Springs.

DESCRIPTION:

Derwent St is part of the boundary of Mt Albert. Only the east side is in Mt Albert.

Derwent St runs north east from Bannerman Rd.

Numbers 1 to 5 lie on the east side of the road.
