Cromwell St was named John St until 1912 (Auckland Libraries, n.d.).
It is probably named after Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of Great Britain.
The land was originally part of a block owned by John Walters. It was named John St for his son, John (Davenport, 1990, p.58).
Only a small part of Cromwell St is in Mt Albert. 11-21 are in Mt Albert, south of Walters Rd, and 2-12 are in Mt Albert, north of Walters Rd (Auckland Libraries, n.d.)
