NAME:
This road was planned and named in 1923 as part of the Rugby Estate.
It seems that the road started to be developed in early 1925: “the council agreed to grant dedication of Altham Avenue, Rugby Estate, which is not yet completed, if a satisfactory bond of £3000 is entered into.” (Report of Mt Albert Borough Council Meeting, held 23 December 1924, reported in New Zealand Herald 24 December).
There is a village named Altham in Lancashire, England, which may be the origin of the name. No specific reason has been found yet for the choice of this name. The source of the name is not given in Auckland Libraries or Davenport.
DESCRIPTION:
Altham Ave runs west from Sandringham Rd to McDonald St.
Rossmay Tce intersects it.
On the north side lie numbers 1 to 31. On the south side lie numbers 2 to 42.
FACTS ABOUT THIS STREET:
Altham Ave first appears in Wise’s Post Office Directory 1926 edition, where information is likely to have been collected in late 1925. Only one house is occupied at this point, what would become #7, home for many years of Daniel and Mary Ryan. Most houses in the street seem to have been built in 1926 and 1927.
