NAME:
William Baker was the owner and subdivider of the Rocky Nook Estate. Streets in this subdivision were named after his sons – Charles, George, Norman [now Tawari St] and Edwin [now Akepiro St / Ace Pl] (Clay, 2022).
This differs from other published sources. Auckland Libraries and Davenport say that Charles St was “probably named after Charles Kelly, the son of a local resident and subdivider John Kelly” (Auckland Libraries, n.d.; see Davenport, 1990, p.48).
DESCRIPTION:
Charles St is a short street that runs west from Dominion Rd to George St. The western half, from the Akepiro St intersection, is in Mt Albert.
Numbers 5 to 9 lie on the north side of the road. Numbers 6 to 18 lie on the south side.
