George St

NAME:

William Baker was the owner and subdivider of the Rocky Nook Estate. Streets in this subdivision were named after his sons – Charles, George, Norman [now Tawari St] and Edwin [now Akepiro St / Ace Pl] (Clay, 2022).

George St was called Hori St until 1916 (Auckland Libraries, n.d.). The southern part was called George St West until at least the 1980s.

Hori is Māori for George (Auckland Libraries, n.d.).

Davenport wondered if the street was named after George Bake (Davenport, 1990, p.84).

DESCRIPTION:

George St runs west from Dominion Rd (this section was called George St West), then turns north and intersects New North Rd.

Tawari St bisects it. Charles St runs off it. The railway line crosses it.

The southern end lies in Mt Eden. Mt Albert starts from #10/#11(check).

On the north/east side, numbers run from 11 to 35. On the south/west side, numbers run from 10 to 60.
