NAME:
Counsel Tce was named by Judge John Rogan, the original subdivider of this land. We believe it is a family name.
Auckland Libraries (n.d.) suggested that the name refers to his occupation as a judge but this seems incorrect.
John Rogan’s father died when he was a very small child, and he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Catherine (nee Hand) and Loughlin Counsel. It is possible that Mary’s Lane (now Lloyd Ave) was named after Rogan’s young half-sister, Mary Counsel.
DESCRIPTION:
Counsel Tce runs north east from Carrington Rd to Lloyd Ave.
On the south side run numbers 1 to 11. On the north side run numbers 2 to 16.
FACTS ABOUT THIS STREET:
Counsel Terrace was formally dedicated as a public road on 11 October 1882 (17A 400). This was part of the subdivision of Lot 34 Parish of Titirangi, undertaken by its owner, Judge John Rogan. The farm and subdivision were called Roganville.
Up to 1926. A track of some sort ran east from Lloyd Ave along the route of Thomas Ave, continuing the formed road that is the modern Councel Tce. See the note on the Thomas Ave page for more information about this.
15 Counsel Tce. This block of flats had the name “Mt Albert Court” painted on the bargeboard at the highest point. This was in place before Feb 2008, and disappeared between March 2012 and April 2014 (Google Street View)
